In the spring, the Khan’s household moved once again to the palace at Shang-tu. Accompanied by his bodyguard of 12,000 horsemen, Kublai Khan traveled in a wide litter carried on the backs of four elephants. He lay across a couch covered with tiger skin; a gold canopy protected him from the sun. His favorite hawk was on his arm, and when his guards told him of game ahead, the Khan freed the bird to hunt. He laughed fiercely when it brought back its prey.

Marco had become a favorite of the Mongol ruler. He was bright and amusing, and his tales of faraway places pleased Kublai Khan. As a newcomer to the court, Marco was innocent of the many palace intrigues. The Khan trusted him. Marco had also mastered four languages since leaving his home in Venice, and this made him very useful to the ruler. Kublai Khan decided to make Marco his emissary (the Khan’s representative) and send him on missions to different parts of his kingdom. Marco could observe the people, their customs, and their way of life and report back to their ruler.
